Statistics, Regulations & Personnel
New Atlantis is an underwater colony dedicated to study and preservation of the ocean and its resources. There will also be other ongoing scientific endeavors. An onsite university will allow students the rare opportunity to live and study in this unique environment. All projects are closely monitored by the Coalition for Oceanic Integrity.
Also operating out of New Atlantis is the UEO's latest project - a highly specialized rescue unit. Along with state of the art medical facilities, this unit will look to the safety and well being not only of the inhabitants of New Atlantis but of all who venture onto or under the ocean.
New Atlantis will remain multinational in scope and all information will be freely shared with the world. There will be no commercial endeavors allowed in the scientific center and only things pertaining to the support and well-being of the colony and the colonists will be permitted at the complex. There will be absolutely no private ownership of real estate (all commercial space is leased) and no mining or drilling rights will be available for any reason. All Concordance rules regarding the reef and other natural flora and fauna will be strictly enforced.
New Atlantis is located in the Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda and the Azores. Its design is loosely based on the descriptions of Ancient Atlantis. It is a 27 level oval/teardrop shaped central hub surrounded by two large rings. The hub is the highest point in the complex and the inner ring is higher than the outer ring giving each section an unobstructed view of the ocean. The hub is the University and science center. The outer ring is docking area with facilities for the largest of vessels. Even the seaQuest can dock here.
The UEO Operation Recovery is based in the outer ring. All vehicles are docked here including the two man observation subs or "Ossies" that the scientists here make great use of. The inner ring which also has emergency docking facilities (as does the hub) is largely a residential and social area.
All areas are connected by skywalks known as seawalks. The mandatory shelterpods are also in place in all three areas and occasional drills are held to be sure all residents are well versed in their use. The lower level of the hub is entirely "glassed" in with newly developed polymer material that has the properties of night vision goggles so that ocean creatures may be observed without intrusive lights. This area is known as the observation deck and is a favorite area of all lovers of the sea.
The entire facility is headed by Dr. Kristin Westphalen. The all new UEO undersea rescue center known as Project Recovery is headed by Adm. Oliver Hudson. The 750 ft. rescue sub Recovery is captained by Captain Katherine Hitchcock. Her X O is Lt Cmdr. Shan. Also in her crew are Lt. Fredricks head pilot, Seaman First Class Morgan expert in use of hyper reality probe and other sensor equipt. Morgan is 19 years old and has been deaf all his life. He was born in an undersea colony and is most at home undersea. Making up part of the crew are several GELFs who served with Captain Hitchcock on the civilian ship Carlton.
Also residing at New Atlantis is Ben Krieg who owns and operates the Nautilus, a night spot modeled after all the Jules Verne books. A favorite hang out of New Atlantians and visitors alike.
The Parapsychology Dept. is headed by Dr. Josh Levin. His assistant is Jamie Leyton a psychic and free spirit. She has recently become acquainted with Miguel Ortiz.
Electronics Expert Carlisle Channing (better known as CC) operates out of New Atlantis. He and his sister Tyler monitor the developments here for the C.O.I. Several GELFs also reside here. The first baby born at New Atlantis was a GELF child named Oceanus.
Chief Crocker is the head of Security for New Atlantis and always pays close attention to what is going on at the Nautilus expecting to catch Krieg doing something illegal. Crocker feels responsible for the safety of inhabitants and visitors to New Atlantis. There will eventually be a training center for dolphins. They will be trained to assist in rescue work.
The story of the founding of New Atlantis is told in a novel of the same name. A print version of the novel may be ordered from Agentwithstyle Click on the name to go to her website for more details.
